20-year old Ezekiel Oduor Okiru was fatally shot by police officers, on November 27th. He was allegedly shot for not wearing a mask. Okiru let his home around 7pm, to close the car wash he worked at in Malaba town. On his way, he was shot by an officer, for allegedly defying an order to stop. Oduor died at Kocholia dispensary while waiting for an ambulance to take him to a hospital.

Protests in Malaba town erupted after Oduor’s killing as residents demanded answers for Oduor’s death and accountability within the National Police Service.

Ezekiel Oduor Okiru’s mother described Oduor as a bright student who had enrolled in Kolanya Boys’ High School, but after learning was suspended because of COVID-19 he began washing vehicles.

Reports indicate that on November 7, Baby Angel was with her mother, at the roof-top of Dykaan College, when a stray bullet hit and killed her. Kenyan media reported that the stray bullet was shot by an officer who was attempting to disperse a mob, who wanted to lynch 3 suspected robbers.

On October 29, around 11am, in Msambweni, 4 armed men bundled Haruni Kondo in a probox and drove off. Kondo called his parents after to inform them of his arrest. After the call, his phone went off and since then no one has been able to trace his whereabouts.

Haruni Kondo is 36-years old and the father of 1. He is a Boda operator and repairs local shipping boats.

According to reports, on October 7, Dennis Lusava was arrested, by officers associated with Mbururu police post, for not wearing a face mask. His parents visited him at the post and found him handcuffed in his underwear, severely beaten and unable to talk or eat. When they arrived the next day to visit him they were informed that he had been released, but no one could locate him.

His body was later found in River Nzoia and was then taken to Webuye Hospital Mortuary.

The autopsy revealed that Lusava’s cause of death was repeated blunt force trauma.

2 police officers and 1 businessman were arrested on October 25th; they will remain in police custody pending the 14-day investigation into Lusava’s killing.

In September 2020, Spencer Thuranira was on his way to pick up medicine for his mother when he encountered a roadblock at Modern two area. According to statements, Spencer was hit on his head several times by police officers. Spencer later died. Government Pathologist, Johansen Oduor at the Nyambene Sub-county Hospital mortuary, said Spencer’s cause of death washed injury due to blunt trauma.

Spencer was 19 years old and had just finished secondary school where he scored a B +. Spencer’s dream was to become an engineer.

On July 7, 2020, around 4pm, it is alleged that Daniel Kibet was collecting firewood for sale in Kipsigon in Mt Elgon, when he was shot by forest officers. He was rushed to the Bungoma Referrel Hospital, but he died on route.

Deputy county commissioner, Welsey Koech, confirmed the shooting and said that Kibet was shot during a confrontation between the forest officer and suspected loggers in the forest.

Daniel Kibet, 23 years old, was the father of two. He was described by his family as the breadwinner, and they are left wondering why he was shot and not arrested.

Police were dispersed to the Nkararo-Enorelet border in Transmara to mitigate the clashes between the Isiria and Erwasingishu clans. Sources told the media that one of the police officers dispersed fatally shot and killed a form 3 student from Manyatta Secondary school.
