20-year old Ezekiel Oduor Okiru was fatally shot by police officers, on November 27th. He was allegedly shot for not wearing a mask. Okiru let his home around 7pm, to close the car wash he worked at in Malaba town. On his way, he was shot by an officer, for allegedly defying an order to stop. Oduor died at Kocholia dispensary while waiting for an ambulance to take him to a hospital.

Protests in Malaba town erupted after Oduor’s killing as residents demanded answers for Oduor’s death and accountability within the National Police Service.

Ezekiel Oduor Okiru’s mother described Oduor as a bright student who had enrolled in Kolanya Boys’ High School, but after learning was suspended because of COVID-19 he began washing vehicles.

On October 18,  19 year old Abubakar Mdathir was shot killed by police, in Approved area in Likoni subcounty, for allegedly being a suspected criminal. According to the family Mr. Mdathir had gone to a nearby wedding ceremony when police in search of suspects shot and killed him.Three others were injured during the operation.

According to reports, on October 7, Dennis Lusava was arrested, by officers associated with Mbururu police post, for not wearing a face mask. His parents visited him at the post and found him handcuffed in his underwear, severely beaten and unable to talk or eat. When they arrived the next day to visit him they were informed that he had been released, but no one could locate him.

His body was later found in River Nzoia and was then taken to Webuye Hospital Mortuary.

The autopsy revealed that Lusava’s cause of death was repeated blunt force trauma.

2 police officers and 1 businessman were arrested on October 25th; they will remain in police custody pending the 14-day investigation into Lusava’s killing.

In September 2020, Spencer Thuranira was on his way to pick up medicine for his mother when he encountered a roadblock at Modern two area. According to statements, Spencer was hit on his head several times by police officers. Spencer later died. Government Pathologist, Johansen Oduor at the Nyambene Sub-county Hospital mortuary, said Spencer’s cause of death washed injury due to blunt trauma.

Spencer was 19 years old and had just finished secondary school where he scored a B +. Spencer’s dream was to become an engineer.

Abubakar was abducted by unknown armed men believed to be police officers. Family witnesses’ claim that he was taken from their home in Magongo, bundled into a doubled cabin car with no number plate and they drove away with him.

On August 23, 2020, around 10pm, police officers from Industrial Police Station killed 8 men who all were manual workers from Nairobi’s Sinai slums.

Reports indicate that one of the deceased named Gakuru alias “Uncle”, contracted the 7 other men to help him load his lorry with goods. Moses Kafu, a 35-year old mason, was of the men that Gakuru contracted.

The 8 men loaded metals in the lorry for approximately 2 hours at Sihra Coffee Machinery go-down in Industrial Area. According to reports, at approximately 10pm officers from Lunga Lunga police post stormed in the building and shot and killed the 8 men.

Police justified their use of force by stating the men were engaging in a robbery and exchanged gunfire when the officers demanded them to surrender.

Residents from Sinai dispute this claim.

IPOA is currently investigating to establish if the police were justified in using lethal force.
